SHOWTIME debuts the poster art for its provocative new drama series THE AFFAIR, which premieres on Sunday, October 12th at 10 p.m. ET/PT.  The highly-anticipated series stars Golden Globe nominees Dominic West (The Wire) and Ruth Wilson (Luther), as well as Emmy nominee Maura Tierney (ER) and SAG Award nominee Joshua Jackson (Fringe).

THE AFFAIR is the exploration of two marriages and the emotional and psychological effects of the affair that disrupts them. Award-winning playwright and writer/producer Sarah Treem (House of Cards, In Treatment) wrote the original script from a story created with Hagai Levi. Treem and Levi both serve as executive producers, along with executive producer and director Jeffrey Reiner (Friday Night Lights) and executive producer Eric Overmyer (The Wire).

Showtime’s The Affair is about so much more than the title implies… there’s mystery, a crime, and a lot of second-guessing thanks to the incredibly inventive storytelling style. (And, yes, there’s also the sex.)

Yahoo TV has an exclusive first look of the fascinating new show (premieres Sunday, Oct. 12 at 10 p.m.), taking you behind the scenes with stars Dominic West, Ruth Wilson, Joshua Jackson, and Maura Tierney to discover what The Affair is really about.

The video kicks off at a photo shoot for the show, which teases just how sexy things get — lots of embraces in the water and in bed — but it’s the interviews with the show’s four stars that are most telling.

Dominic West sets the scene, describing his leading man Noah: “He’s a public school teacher and a writer from Brooklyn. A happily married guy with four kids, and he goes out to Montauk and he starts an affair with a girl he meets out there. And he ruins his life for her.”

Ruth Wilson’s Alison is that girl. “I think that she has always wished she could do more with her life, escape the sort of small community,” Wilson says. “There’s something about Noah that she’s kind of attracted to.”

Maura Tierney, who plays Noah’s wife Helen, explains what makes the show so unique: “The interesting thing about it is the first half of the show is told through the man’s perspective, and the second half of the show is told through the woman’s perspective.” “So you never really know what’s going on,” West adds.

And that goes for the crime element of the show as well, with an as-yet-unknown victim and both Noah and Alison in questioning in the present day, their affair seemingly far behind them at that point.

"This show expects the audience to have an opinion," says Joshua Jackson, who plays Alison’s husband Cole. "It’s a lean-forward show, not a sit-back show."

And we’re definitely leaning forward, waiting for more.

The Affair premieres Sunday, Oct. 12 at 10 p.m. on Showtime.
